Dealing With People

James 2:1 by Dr. Michael Miller

Dealing With People
Becoming Spiritually Mature -- Part 4
James 2:1-13

What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.  Ps. 8:4-5 NIV

1.  Disrespect no one
My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.  Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves? James 2:1-4a NIV

Show proper respect to everyone.  1 Pet. 2:17 NIV

Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect.  Rom. 13:7 NIV

 2.  Defer to God’s judgment
Have you not…become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Jam. 2:4b-6 NIV

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
Jam. 4:12 NIV

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.  Mt. 7:1-2 NIV

 3.  Demonstrate God’s love
If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. James 2:8-9 NIV

The entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Gal. 5:14 NIV
The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.  Gal. 5:6 NIV

 4.  Dare to be merciful to all
Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.  James 2:12-13 NIV

You have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.  Mt. 23:23 NIV
