How God Changes Me

Genesis 32 by Dr. Michael Miller

A Distinctive Life—Part 1

Genesis 32:  An incident in Jacob’s life

illustrates the process God uses to change us.

1.  Crisis:  I struggle with God

Jacob was let all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break. When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.  Gen. 32:24-25 NLT

Even in the womb, Jacob struggled with his brother; when he became a man, he even fought with God.  Hosea 12:3 NLT

 2.  Commitment:  I seek God’s blessing

The man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”  Gen. 32:26 NLT

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Gal. 6:9 NIV

 3.  Confession:  I admit my need

The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.  Gen. 32:27 NIV

Jacob = “deceiver, manipulator”

4.  Conversion:  I am changed

“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel … Then he blessed Jacob there. Jacob named the place Peniel … for he said, “I have seen God face to face….”  Gen. 32:28-30 NLT

Israel = “prince of God”

The sun was rising as Jacob left Peniel, and he was limping….  Gen. 32:31 NLT

Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!  2 Cor. 5:17 NLT

 Personal Questions:

* In what areas am I struggling with God?

* In what areas have I felt like giving up?

* What do I need to admit about myself?

* Will I let Christ give me a new identity?
